ASI event to promote environment
Associated Students Inc. will be holding an event for Earth Day on Tuesday in the Library Quad from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to promote the environment and sustainability on campus.
Walter Wallace, vice president of University Affairs, organized the event to do something for students and promote ASI.
A raffle will be held towards the end of the even. Prizes include bikes and outdoor trips for backpacking, camping and horseback riding provided through Peak Adventures at Sacramento State.
A bike mechanic will also be at the event providing free tune-ups to students, as well as a rock-climbing wall that students can use.
ASI will fund all giveaways and services at the event. Legislation for the event funding was approved at ASI's special board meeting today and the event will cost ASI about $10,946. The funds will come out of the board project fund that director's access when they want to hold events.
Board members were both opposed and in favor of the event budget.
ASI President Christina Romero said the event budget is almost the total amount of ASI's board project fund last year. She said the board needs to be careful with how they spend student's money.
Wallace said he looked at the board project fund and decided to hold a big event because the money was not being used. About $13,000 will be left in the board project fund after the event.
Justine Yang, director of Undeclared, said they don't have to use the money just because it's available.
Felix Barba, director of Arts and Letters, made a motion to amend the legislation by decreasing the event budget to a maximum of $7,000.
Barba said he proposed the amendment because of the concerns voiced and the need to respect student dollars.
The amendment failed when put to a vote by the board.
Curtis Grima, vice president of Academic Affairs, said it was great Wallace put together the event and applauded the board's commitment to the environment.
"I do not think it's a waste of student dollars by any means," Grima said. "I think it's a great use of student dollars and making sure that we have a world to live in in the future."
