ASI endorsements
State Hornet Staff
Issue date: 4/23/08 Section: Opinion
Editor's note: The State Hornet's ASI endorsements were decided upon by Editor in Chief Gamaliel Ortiz, Managing Editors Ashley Evans and Cody Kitaura and Opinion Editor Jordan Guinn. ASI beat writer Ashley Downton was not involved in the process, nor were either news editor.
• President
Miguel Cervantes
(Action)
The editorial board is impressed with Cervantes' experience. He is one of the more visible ASI members and has specific examples on how to improve campus safety and student involvement. The student body's only choice, Cervantes is expected to excel because he has a chance to focus on issues rather than campaigning.
• Executive Vice President
Roberto Torres
(Action)
He is currently serving as secretary of State Affairs for ASI. His previous experience with ASI and vibrant ideas to improve communication between students and their government is welcome and refreshing. Torres champions the University Hour, which would allow students to become more involved with campus activities.
• Vice President of Finance
Timothy Snyder
(Action)
He is running unopposed, which he considers 'bittersweet.'
He is the incumbent. He says he has a passion for students and their diversity. He wants to celebrate campus makeup. He's very qualified to continue his job, while trying to increase awareness of ASI grants and scholarships. A business major, Snyder understands his position.
• Vice President of
University Affairs
Felix Barba
(Action)
He is currently the ASI Director for the College of Arts and Letters. He has served on the University Union's Board of Directors. Barba wants to establish a volunteer corps that will expand student involvement in ASI.
• Vice President of
Academic Affairs
Jennifer Alvelais
(Imagine Revolution)
Alvelais is a dynamic speaker with bold ideas. She wants to promote ASI visibility through holding office hours in the Library
Quad. She wants to use MySpace and Facebook as forums
for promotion and bring ASI to the students rather than waiting for students to come to her.
• Director of Business
No endorsements
Both candidates, Kiran Tariq and Jimmy Tsang, failed to return e-mails and phone calls from The Hornet for an interview. Furthermore, neither candidate filled out the questionnaire that The Hornet produced for all candidates. It appears that neither candidate takes the position nor its responsibilities seriously.
• Director of Education
Florenda McGee
(Action)
Straightforward and logical, McGee is a wise choice for the position. McGee wants students to have the same advisers from beginning to end. She wants to promote ASI more at Freshmen Orientation.
• Director of Health and Human Services
Kevin Chun
(Imagine Revolution)
Intense and passionate about his position, Chun is the logical choice. He attributes problems on campus to student apathy and ignorance. Chun wants to reach out to students who live on campus and add lighting to the intramural fields to promote Rec Sports and other student activities.
• Director of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics
Fely Sita-Makaba
(Action)
Fely is the incumbent for this position and is qualified to run again. She speaks four languages and can reach out to foreign-born students on campus. Besides promoting unity and diversity on campus, Fely wants to ensure students that their voices are heard and respected.
• Director of Social Sciences
and Interdisciplinary Studies
Terry Martin
(Imagine Revolution)
Martin wants to encourage student involvement through focus groups and improving ASI's outreach during orientation
