SacLink e-mail will still forward

Last week, Student Affairs sent an e-mail to students stating SacLink will no longer forward university e-mails to personal email accounts.
But an associate vice president at Information Resources and Technology said that there will be no changes to SacLink forwarding.
The original e-mail stated, "If you are reading this message on a Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, or similar private email account, that means your campus e-mail is currently being forwarded to that non-campus account. However, keep in mind that later this school year, we will no longer forward your campus e-mail to your non-campus account."
After hearing many complaints from students, the Hornet called Larry Gilbert, vice president of Information Resources and Technology, on Wednesday to find out why the change will happen.
Larry Gilbert was not able to be reached for comment and was not at his office Friday.
Doug Jackson, associate vice president of Academic Computing Resources, said that there has been a lot of confusion about this.
"The forwards are staying in place," Jackson said. He also said that it might have been an unfortunate choice of words.
For the present, students will still be able to receive SacLink e-mails forwarded to their private accounts. Jackson said this could change in the future.
The e-mail sent by Student Affairs only affects students who use their private e-mails to receive campus information unrelated to SacLink.
Jackson said he was not sure at the moment where students might enter their own private e-mail addresses for university business.
In the future, freshmen may not be able to use the forwarding option but, "for existing students there is no change."
"We are moving to a more centralized service," he said. "What's happened is students have missed out on important messages. We are simply going to be consistent."
