New MySacState portal consolidates, confuses

MySacState is now one step closer to becoming "mine." The new web portal, version 2.0, features a one-time login for SacLink email, messaging and SacCT.
While the new version helps centralize communication and business with the university, it may be confusing for some students.
"It certainly looks nicer, as in more colors, but is more confusing. I think the old site is better, if only because it is more familiar," said student Scott Bartenhagen. "I miss the old version's simple color scheme and layout."
The designers of the new portal anticipated some apprehension. It is difficult for most people to adjust to change, especially when the change is fairly drastic.
"Many people don't like new things right away just because they're different, but I think that students will find the one-time sign-on very beneficial," said Larry Gilbert, vice president and chief information officer of Information Resources and Technology.
It may take time for students to become familiar with the new portal, but it has been well-received in general.
"The student response was extremely positive. Ninety percent [of students] is using it on a weekly basis," said Gilbert. "I think the students will find the portal to be very beneficial to their life here at Sac State."
The new portal, modeled after one used at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, was up for official use on Sept. 16, and construction began about one year ago. During the summer, some students and staff tested it, giving positive and negative feedback as well as ideas for improvement.
"Pre-testing was done with some staff and student groups," said Doug Jackson, associate vice president of Academic Computing. "In general, it was well-received, and we incorporated most of the suggestions."
Though the portal construction has officially ended, improvements and additions are continually being considered and added.
"The portal is an ongoing, dynamic product. There is going to be future versions," Jackson said. "It is not a static solution that we put out once and never look at again."
