Sacramento State's student run radio station KSSU 1580 AM was nominated for an MTV woodie award for best college radio station as well as eight College Music Journal awards.

Michael Smith, KSSU DJ, felt it was great for the radio station to be recognized, especially by MTV.

"We've won some CMJ awards before, but to be recognized by MTV really means a lot. I mean, you don't get better than MTV when it comes to music at the college level," Smith said.

"I think it's great that KSSU is getting recognition because the staff works very hard and the school doesn't fund the station enough," said senior English major Cuitlahuac Sanchez.

Mike Young, former KSSU DJ, felt the award nominations are absolutely great and well deserved.

"KSSU went from being really small and local to being internationally recognized, and it has to do with having great music directors and managers. These awards are a definitive show of their hard work," Young said.

Sydney Yanez, junior recreation and leisure major, said it was great to see KSSU get national recognition since they do so much with the resources they have.

KSSU received CMJ nominations for music director of the year, best student-run non-FM station, most ground breaking, best use of the web, most likely to reinvent radio, biggest asset to community, best use of limited resources and best team effort.

The winners for the CMJ awards will be announced Oct. 23.
