Students and faculty were invited to commemorate the building of the recreation and wellness facilities with a "Topping Out" ceremony today.

In the construction field, topping out is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed on top of a building. Today, participants were asked to sign their names on the beam before it was placed.

"This facility signifies a new beginning for this campus," said Tony Moayed, president of TMCS Construction Management. "This is going to be a place for students to spend quality time."

The finished facility will have 151,000 square feet of space that will offer state of the art fitness equipment, recreation and athletic opportunities.

Sacramento State will be able to boast about having the largest climbing wall in the CSU system come fall 2010 when the facility is set to open.

Moayed also introduced many of the Sac State grads that have come back to work on this project.

The center will reflect good design decisions like orientation to natural light, as well as the incorporation of low-energy materials and technology such as recycled content finishes, self shading skylights, and site cast exterior panels, according to the Well's website.

So the new health center will be a place where students can spend quality time? Even with a recreation center and other activities, I doubt students will stick around to use the facility very much. (Continued…)
