More than 1,000 students and faculty members from the University of California, California State University, community colleges and school districts gathered at the Capitol today to protest against budget cuts and fee increases.
Lillian Taiz, president of the California Faculty Association and organizer of the protest, said the rally was just the start of a momentum that must be built to create change in funding higher education.
"If the Legislature isn't listening today, they will be tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, because we aren't going to shut up," Taiz said.
Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez said he applauds the students' and faculty members' efforts to send their message to the state legislators.
"Unprecendented state budget cuts to the CSU have forced us to reduce student access and jeopardized the quality of the education we offer," Gonzalez said in a statement to the State Hornet. "The future of our great state depends on innovative, educated and talented CSU graduates who enter our workforce and strengthen our competitive advantage in the global economy."
